Breaking-Airlines To Pay Compensation To Delayed, Canceled Flight Passengers, FG

Festus Keyamo, the Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Management, recently made an important announcement regarding the resumption of payment of compensation to customers for cancelled or delayed flights by domestic carriers. Keyamo addressed the challenges faced by passengers due to flight delays and cancellations during a meeting with members of the Airline Operators in Nigeria (AON) in Abuja on Monday.

During the meeting, Keyamo highlighted the significant number of flight delays and cancellations recorded in the year 2022. The data revealed an alarming figure of over 47,144 cases across various airlines, with Airpeace, Overland, and Azman being among the airlines most affected by these issues.

According to a report by The Cable, the minister issued a warning, stating that the Federal Government might soon activate the Nigeria Civil Aviation (NCAA) Act in response to the prevailing situation. The activation of this act signifies the government's intention to address the challenges faced by both passengers and airlines in the aviation industry.

Keyamo acknowledged the numerous complaints from travelers regarding flight delays and cancellations. While accepting that the government bears some responsibility, he emphasized that not all instances of delays or cancellations are directly attributable to the government. Keyamo cited examples of flimsy excuses provided by airlines, such as excessively long waiting times for passengers to pass through security screening, leading to flight cancellations.

Additionally, Keyamo reaffirmed his commitment to shed light on the hidden or overlooked provisions of the NCAA Act to the Nigerian people. He assured them that compensation for delayed or cancelled flights would be enforced, even in cases where the circumstances are beyond the control of the airlines, which are often referred to as "acts of God."

The minister expressed his unwavering support for both airline operators and the Nigerian public. He promised to take necessary measures to ensure that the issue of delayed and cancelled flights is effectively addressed. Keyamo urged airline operators to prioritize customer satisfaction and maintain high standards of service delivery. By doing so, he believes that the aviation industry in Nigeria can regain the trust and confidence of the travelling public.
Festus Keyamo, as the Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Management, has taken note of the challenges posed by flight delays and cancellations in Nigeria. He has expressed his determination to rectify the situation by resuming compensation payments, enforcing the provisions of the NCAA Act, and supporting both airline operators and passengers. Keyamo's ultimate goal is to improve the overall aviation experience in Nigeria and ensure that travelers' rights are protected.
