AFCON 2025 Set for Historic Winter Kickoff as Super Eagles Begin Preparations

Rabat, Morocco — The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) is set to kick off this Sunday, December 21, in Morocco, marking the first time the tournament will be held during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

The historic “Winter Edition” has already generated widespread attention across the continent, with national teams finalizing preparations and fans eagerly anticipating kickoff.

Opening Match

Host nation Morocco will face Comoros in the opening fixture on Sunday, December 21, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The match will officially launch the month-long tournament.

Super Eagles Open Training Camp

Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, has opened its AFCON training camp in Cairo, Egypt. Team officials confirmed that 22 players have already reported to camp, including key players Ademola Lookman and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The Nigerian squad is scheduled to travel to Fez, Morocco, on Thursday, December 18, where final preparations will continue ahead of their group-stage matches.

  • Nigeria vs Tanzania — Tuesday, December 23 (1:00 PM WAT)
  • Nigeria vs Tunisia — Saturday, December 27 (1:00 PM WAT)

The fixture against Tunisia is expected to be one of the most anticipated group-stage encounters, featuring two of Africa’s traditional football powerhouses.

Cameroon Squad Controversy

In Cameroon, preparations have been overshadowed by controversy following the announcement of the final squad by newly appointed head coach David Pagou. In a surprising move, Pagou omitted Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana and national team captain Vincent Aboubakar.

The decision has sparked intense debate among fans and analysts, raising questions about Cameroon’s tactical direction heading into the tournament.
