Nigerian Presidency Affirms Democracy's Strength; Rejects Claims of One-Party State Under Tinubu

In a decisive statement released on April 27, 2025, the Nigerian presidency has firmly rejected allegations from opposition circles that the nation's democracy is under threat and that it is gravitating towards a one-party state under President Bola Tinubu. The statement, titled "Democracy Strong And Alive in Nigeria," was issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, and aims to clarify the administration's stance amidst a wave of political defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Context of the Statement

The presidency's response comes in the wake of significant political shifts, including the recent defections of prominent figures such as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Vice Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). These moves have raised concerns among opposition leaders and civil society activists, who argue that such transitions indicate a troubling trend towards authoritarianism and a weakening of democratic principles.

Onanuga characterised the claims of a one-party state as "alarmist" and "baseless," asserting that the ongoing political realignment reflects the free will of individuals who believe in President Tinubu's reform agenda. He stated, "Nigerians migrating to the APC and expressing support for President Tinubu are doing so out of their free will, based on the belief that the reforms being executed are in the interest of Nigerians and the unborn generation.

Rejection of Authoritarian Claims

The presidency emphasised that democracy in Nigeria is not only intact but is also thriving. Onanuga pointed out that the accusations of coercion or bribery associated with these defections are unfounded, insisting that no policy or directive from the presidency seeks to dismantle democracy or weaken opposition parties. He stated, "Contrary to the propaganda in circulation, no policy, official action, or directive from the Presidency seeks to dismantle democracy or weaken the opposition.

Furthermore, Onanuga criticised the hypocrisy of opposition figures who previously celebrated defections to other parties but now lament the political landscape when it shifts against them. He remarked, "It is certainly not part of President Tinubu's job to organise or strengthen opposition parties," highlighting that the organisational failures within the opposition should not be blamed on the ruling party2.

Democratic Principles and Political Participation

The statement reaffirmed the administration's commitment to democratic values, including freedom of association, speech, and choice. Onanuga urged all Nigerians to respect the political decisions of their fellow citizens and to engage positively in the political process. He noted, "When citizens cannot freely join the political parties of their choice, democracy is imperilled." The presidency called for unity among Nigerians to protect the democratic framework, emphasising that the political shifts occurring are a natural part of a vibrant democracy.

Onanuga concluded the statement by commending President Tinubu and the APC leadership for making the party attractive to willing Nigerians, asserting that the administration is dedicated to reversing decades of economic mismanagement while fostering a competitive political environment. He stated, "President Tinubu is an avowed democrat whose political activism in strengthening opposition platforms is well documented.

The presidency's strong rebuttal of claims regarding a drift towards a one-party state reflects a broader strategy to maintain confidence in Nigeria's democratic institutions. As the nation approaches the 2027 elections, the Tinubu administration is seeking to emphasise its commitment to a multiparty system, encouraging political participation and engagement among all Nigerians. This stance aims to reassure citizens that democracy is alive and well and ready to face the challenges ahead.
