"ECWA Calls for Urgent Government Action on Security and Economic Hardship at 72nd General Church Council Meeting"

The leadership of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has expressed deep concern over the escalating hardship Nigerians face, particularly regarding security issues, during its recent 72nd General Church Council (GCC) meeting held in Jos, Plateau State. The Church's leadership has called on the government at all levels to prioritize the safety of citizens and to take decisive action against the rising tide of violence and insecurity across the nation.

Key Concerns Raised by ECWA:

Security Prioritization: The Church emphasized the urgent need for the government to prioritize the security of all Nigerians. In a communique by ECWA President Rev. Job Bagat, the council noted the persistent and escalating violence, particularly in states such as Borno, Benue, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Plateau. While commending the efforts of government and security agencies, the council highlighted that attacks and killings continue unabated, necessitating more robust measures to address these issues.

Kidnapping and Economic Hardship: ECWA also voiced its alarm over the rampant cases of kidnapping for ransom, which have inflicted significant suffering and financial strain on victims and their families. The Church urged the government to intensify efforts to combat this menace and ensure the safe release of those currently held captive. Furthermore, the council addressed the broader economic challenges facing Nigerians, including inflation, rising living costs, and unemployment, calling for implementing people-friendly policies to alleviate poverty and improve living conditions.

Commitment to Support: The Church reaffirmed its commitment to providing pastoral care and support to those affected by violence and economic hardship. It also plans to enhance its role in community support and relief efforts.

Additional Developments:

During the GCC meeting, ECWA approved the creation of two new District Church Councils (DCCs) to facilitate the growth and expansion of its mission, bringing the total number of DCCs to 96. The council also addressed internal matters, urging members to resolve disputes amicably rather than resorting to legal action. An ICT policy was also approved to modernize church operations, and the ECWA Leadership Institute was upgraded to enhance its training capabilities.

The ECWA's call to action reflects a growing concern among religious and community leaders regarding the state of security and economic stability in Nigeria. They urge immediate government intervention to safeguard the well-being of its citizens.
