We Are Looking to Utilise Solar to Power Some of Our Medical Facilities – Salako

Abuja, Nigeria — The Minister of State for Health & Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, has announced that the Federal Government is set to utilise solar energy to power selected medical facilities across the country.

Speaking on Thursday, Dr. Salako said the decision stems from the need to strengthen Nigeria’s health infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted power supply in hospitals and clinics. He noted that energy is critical for patient care, particularly for emergency services, vaccine storage, and the operation of essential medical equipment.

“We are looking to utilise solar to power some of our medical facilities. Finances are always a limiting factor, but we will use blended financing mechanisms, grants, and budgetary funding to achieve this,” Salako stated.

The minister explained that the initiative would combine multiple funding sources, including grants from international partners, donor agencies, and internal budgetary allocations, alongside private sector support.

Salako emphasized that the solarisation project would reduce dependence on diesel generators, cut operational costs, and improve healthcare delivery, especially in rural and underserved areas where grid power supply is unreliable.

The Federal Ministry of Health is expected to work with both local and international partners to identify priority facilities, establish financing frameworks, and roll out the first phase of installations in the coming months.

Observers say if fully implemented, the project could significantly transform Nigeria’s healthcare sector by ensuring reliable electricity, reducing environmental impact, and boosting overall service delivery.
