Nigerians Were Exposed to Odium with Presidential Pardon List — Falana
BEFOCUS News Desk | Abuja, Nigeria — October 31, 2025
Renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has condemned the federal government over the recent presidential pardon list, describing it as a national embarrassment that exposed Nigerians to global odium and ridicule.
Falana stated that this is not the first time the exercise has been mishandled, noting that individuals who do not deserve pardon have been recommended for it, while some convicted under state laws have found their way onto the list.
“Individuals who do not deserve pardon have been recommended for it, and those convicted under state laws have found their way onto the list. The federal government owes it to the public to ensure that such a colossal embarrassment does not recur.”
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged the government to restore public trust by ensuring transparency and constitutional compliance in future pardon exercises. He also demanded a formal apology from the Attorney General of the Federation.
“At the very least, the Attorney General of the Federation should apologize to Nigerians for this incident,” Falana declared.
Why It Matters
Analysts say the presidential pardon should serve the cause of justice and rehabilitation, not politics. Governance experts warn that controversies around pardon decisions weaken faith in Nigeria’s legal and ethical systems.
Public Reactions
Across social media, many Nigerians expressed anger and disappointment. Calls have intensified for clear criteria, public participation, and stronger oversight in how such lists are prepared.
“The pardon list has become a joke,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter). “If people convicted under state laws are included, what hope is left for the rule of law?”
