Gaza Update: 12 Prisoners Released Amid Claims of “Brutal Escalation”

By News Desk | December 17, 2025

A developing humanitarian situation is unfolding in the Gaza Strip following the release of at least 12 Palestinian detainees from Israeli custody on Wednesday afternoon, as Palestinian authorities and human rights groups issued fresh allegations of abuse inside Israeli prisons.

Details of the Release

According to official statements from the Gaza Media Office and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS), the detainees were released within the last hour at the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing in southern Gaza.

While the identities of all those freed have not yet been publicly disclosed, emergency medical teams from the Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed that the released individuals were immediately transported to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital for urgent medical evaluation.

Health Concerns Raised

Medical officials reported signs of severe physical exhaustion and malnutrition among the freed detainees, raising renewed concerns over detention conditions. Doctors at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said comprehensive examinations are ongoing to determine the extent of health complications.

Allegations of Escalation Inside Prisons

Coinciding with the release, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office issued a separate alert accusing Israeli prison authorities of a “dangerous escalation” earlier on Wednesday.

The group alleged that several high-profile Palestinian detainees held in Damon and Megiddo prisons were assaulted by prison guards “until they bled,” describing the incidents as an attempt to intimidate other prisoners. These claims could not be independently verified at the time of filing.

Broader Context

The latest release forms part of ongoing, limited prisoner releases tied to the Trump-brokered peace framework implemented earlier in 2025. However, Palestinian officials and rights organizations caution that the humanitarian situation inside detention facilities remains dire.

According to figures cited by WAFA News Agency, more than 9,300 Palestinians are still being held in Israeli custody. Particular concern has been raised over the condition of 41-year-old detainee Fadi Odeh, who is reportedly suffering from paralysis amid what advocates describe as prolonged medical neglect.

International Attention Grows

The Israel-Gaza conflict continues to draw intense global scrutiny, with international observers closely monitoring prisoner releases, detention conditions, and their implications for regional stability and humanitarian law.

Further updates are expected as medical assessments continue and responses emerge from Israeli authorities regarding the latest allegations.
