WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE: Why You Are in a Market Whether You Like It or Not
An Exclusive Analysis of Chapter 1 of The Compulsory Marketplace by Itoro Sunday Uwah.
You did not choose to be here.
Before you knew the sound of your own name, life already had your number. Before you saw your own reflection, time had begun counting your days.
As we step into 2026, many young people are making New Year resolutions about money, career, and travel. But most of these resolutions will fail by February. Why?
Because most people are trying to play a game they do not understand. They are trying to negotiate with a reality they have not accepted.
In my book, The Compulsory Marketplace, I open with a brutal truth that usually shocks my readers: Life is not a playground. It is a Marketplace. And the trading began before your first breath.
The Unconscious Adventurer
In Chapter 1, titled "The Market Opens Without You," I explore the mystery of our arrival.
We are all “unconscious adventurers.” No child decides which womb to exit from. No infant chooses their country, their skin color, or the economic state of their parents. Our entry is involuntary.
“The journey begins without your permission, but it cannot continue without your decisions.”
This is where the crisis begins for the African youth. We spend the first 20 years of our lives acting like Passengers. We wait for the government to drive the bus. We wait for our parents to pay the fare. We wait for “God’s time.”
But the Market does not wait.
The Market as a Mirror
The core philosophy of Chapter 1 is that the world is a Mirror that reflects Value.
You might be a “nice person.” You might be religious. You might have a First Class degree. But the Market does not care about your moral standing; it cares about your Exchange Value.
- You trade your time for education.
- You trade your skills for money.
- You trade your attention for influence.
- Sometimes, sadly, you trade your soul for approval.
The tragedy of the modern youth is that they are entering this brutal market with empty hands. They are looking for a job (which is a charity request) instead of offering a product (which is a business transaction).
From Fate to Choice
There is a powerful quote by Carl Jung I referenced in this chapter:
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
If you are broke right now, it is not “fate.” It is not your “village people.” It is simply that you are living unconsciously in a Market that demands conscious participation.
You are a trader who forgot to open his stall.
The Crossroads of Awareness
So, what must you do in 2026?
You must move from being a Passenger to a Participant.
“The market does not pause for a new trader. You are expected to trade—to exchange—to exist with intent... You must move from a crowd-filler to a value-bringer.”
This is the shift from Survival to Significance.
When you stop asking, “Who will help me?” and start asking, “What do I have that the market needs?”— that is the day your poverty ends.
Your Assignment
Stop looking for a Savior. Look at your hands. What are you selling?
- If you are selling Time, you will always be poor (Time is limited).
- If you are selling Value, you will be wealthy (Value is scalable).
The market is open. You are already in it. The invoice has been issued.
Are you going to pay it, or are you going to be sold?
