October 1, 2026
EXELLO RELEASES WHO TOLD YOU ON NIGERIA’S 66TH INDEPENDENCE DAY — A MUSICAL CHALLENGE TO A GENERATION TO QUESTION ITS LIMITS
Released through Witty Global Studios and inspired by the BEFOCUS Children and Youth Foundation’s Mandate for Humanity, WHO TOLD YOU transforms a question about limitation, identity and possibility into music for a new generation.
ABUJA, NIGERIA — October 1, 2026 — As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, Nigerian recording artist EXELLO today releases WHO TOLD YOU through Witty Global Studios—a purpose-driven body of music built around one deceptively simple question:
WHO TOLD YOU THAT YOU COULDN’T?
The album is now available across major digital music platforms.

More than a title, WHO TOLD YOU is an interrogation of the voices, assumptions and inherited beliefs that can quietly define a young person’s sense of possibility long before they have had the opportunity to define themselves.
Released deliberately on Nigeria’s Independence Day, the project connects national independence with personal liberation—arguing that political freedom is incomplete when a generation remains psychologically imprisoned by fear, inferiority, social expectations and inherited limitations.
66 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE. ONE QUESTION FOR THE NEXT GENERATION.
On October 1, 1960, Nigeria formally became an independent nation.
Sixty-six years later, WHO TOLD YOU turns the independence conversation inward:
What does freedom mean if a child grows up believing that his or her future has already been limited?
Across Nigeria, Africa and the diaspora, millions of young people encounter messages about who they are supposed to become, what they supposedly cannot achieve, where they belong and how far they should expect to go.
Those messages can come from poverty, family circumstances, classrooms, communities, cultural expectations, disappointment, social media or even well-meaning people whose own fears become another generation’s boundaries.
WHO TOLD YOU challenges the listener to examine those voices rather than automatically obey them.
Because before accepting a limitation, there is a question worth asking:
Who told you?
Who defined the boundary?
Who established the ceiling?
Was it truth—or simply an opinion repeated long enough to sound like truth?
That question is the intellectual and emotional foundation of the album.
FROM THE BEFOCUS VISION TO MUSIC
The philosophy behind WHO TOLD YOU is rooted in the work of the BEFOCUS Children and Youth Foundation and its broader Mandate for Humanity—a commitment to raising children and young people who understand their identity, discover their abilities, develop character and recognise their responsibility to society.
BEFOCUS works from a fundamental conviction:
A society cannot sustainably change its future without deliberately shaping the minds that will inherit that future.
Through education, books, storytelling, film, music and digital media, the Foundation seeks to move conversations about young people beyond temporary motivation toward self-discovery, discipline, character, responsibility and purposeful development.
WHO TOLD YOU extends that philosophy into music.
The objective is not simply to tell young people that they can succeed. It is to encourage them to investigate the assumptions governing their lives.
A child may forget a speech.
A young person may never read a policy document.
But music can travel with them—to school, through disappointment, into moments of doubt, across borders and through different stages of life.
WHO TOLD YOU was created for that journey.
“A message may enter the mind through reason, but music can carry it into memory. WHO TOLD YOU is the Mandate for Humanity translated into rhythm. We want every child and every young person to develop the courage to interrogate the voice that tells them to settle beneath their potential.”
— Itoro Sunday Uwah, Founder, BEFOCUS Children and Youth Foundation
WITTY GLOBAL STUDIOS: WHERE PURPOSE MEETS PRODUCTION
Released through Witty Global Studios, WHO TOLD YOU represents a broader creative philosophy: African entertainment does not have to choose between relevance and responsibility.
Music can entertain.
It can travel.
It can compete commercially.
And it can still carry an idea capable of outliving the song itself.
Witty Global Studios is developing creative projects at the intersection of music, storytelling, identity and social impact, with an emphasis on African voices capable of speaking both locally and globally.
With WHO TOLD YOU, the studio seeks to demonstrate that purpose-driven music can be contemporary without becoming disposable, and socially conscious without losing emotional or cultural appeal.
“We believe African music can move the body while awakening the mind. WHO TOLD YOU represents the kind of creative work we want to champion—music with identity, professional ambition and a message capable of travelling beyond borders.”
— Witty Global Studios
WHO IS EXELLO?
EXELLO represents a generation coming of age in an era of extraordinary possibility and extraordinary pressure.
His artistic direction combines contemporary sound with themes of identity, ambition, resilience, self-discovery and personal responsibility.
Even the name EXELLO carries an implicit challenge: excel beyond expectation.
Rather than treating music merely as background entertainment, EXELLO approaches it as a vehicle capable of carrying ideas.
With WHO TOLD YOU, he addresses young listeners who have encountered rejection, comparison, discouragement or circumstances that appear to have already decided their future.
The album does not pretend obstacles do not exist.
Instead, it asks something more fundamental:
Who gave those obstacles permission to define you?
THREE DECLARATIONS AT THE HEART OF WHO TOLD YOU
The album is anchored around three interconnected ideas:
LIMITS CAN BE LEARNED.
Some of the boundaries people carry were not present at birth. They were absorbed from environments, experiences, repeated opinions and inherited assumptions. What has been learned can also be examined, challenged and replaced.
VOICES ARE NOT VERDICTS.
What someone says about a child does not automatically become the truth about that child. Opinions, rejection, circumstances and present conditions should not be confused with destiny.
INDEPENDENCE MUST ALSO EXIST WITHIN.
A nation requires institutions, infrastructure and economic opportunity—but its long-term development also depends on citizens capable of independent thought, disciplined action, creativity and responsibility.
That is why the title deliberately remains a question.
WHO TOLD YOU does not dictate an answer.
It requires the listener to investigate one.
WHY THIS MESSAGE MATTERS
Africa's demographic future will be profoundly shaped by its young people.
But a youthful population becomes an advantage only when its potential is developed.
Education matters.
Opportunity matters.
Employment matters.
Technology matters.
Institutions matter.
But beneath each of them is another critical resource:
the human mind.
A young person who cannot imagine possibilities may fail to recognise opportunities even when they appear. A young person who has internalised inferiority may seek validation instead of developing value. And a generation conditioned to accept limitations without questioning them risks reproducing yesterday’s boundaries tomorrow.
This is where music possesses unusual cultural power.
Music crosses geography.
It crosses educational levels.
It travels through phones, headphones, schools, streets, homes and communities.
It can make an idea memorable before the listener consciously begins analysing it.
WHO TOLD YOU intends to use that reach responsibly.
AN OPEN INVITATION TO INSTITUTIONS
The release is therefore more than a commercial music launch.
It is an invitation to institutions concerned with the development of children and young people.
BEFOCUS Children and Youth Foundation, Witty Global Studios and EXELLO invite educational institutions, youth organisations, development partners, media organisations, cultural institutions, corporate organisations and public-sector stakeholders to explore how WHO TOLD YOU can support broader conversations around identity, self-discovery, character, responsibility and youth development.
Potential collaborators include schools and universities; youth and community organisations; broadcasters and media houses; NGOs and foundations; corporate CSR programmes; cultural organisations; faith communities; ministries responsible for youth, education and culture; and regional and international development institutions.
The album can provide a creative entry point for conversations in:
schools • youth programmes • mentorship sessions • community initiatives • media campaigns • leadership programmes • creative workshops • conferences • educational events
The ambition is straightforward:
Do not merely give young people answers. Teach them to question the assumptions limiting their possibilities.
A QUESTION THAT CAN TRAVEL BEYOND MUSIC
The campaign surrounding the album invites audiences to take the title beyond streaming platforms.
Parents can ask it.
Teachers can ask it.
Mentors can ask it.
Coaches can ask it.
Communities can ask it.
Most importantly, young people can begin asking it of themselves.
When someone says:
“You cannot.”
“You are not qualified.”
“People like you don't reach that level.”
“Your background has already decided your future.”
“Be realistic.”
There is now a question waiting:
WHO TOLD YOU?
Not as arrogance.
Not as denial of reality.
But as an invitation to examine whether a perceived boundary is a fact—or merely an inherited conclusion.
LISTEN. QUESTION. SHARE.
